AAP Update: October 2005
Dave Tayloe, Jr., MD, FAAP
District IV Chairperson

Congratulations to South Carolina and Virginia! These Chapters were awarded the Outstanding Chapter Awards for the AAP in the Medium and Large Chapter Divisions respectively during the Annual Chapter Forum in Chicago in August. Iris Snider, our District IV Vice-Chairperson who participated in the selection process for the AAP, will present these awards to the Chapters during upcoming Chapter meetings.

During the recent NCE in Washington, DC, the Academy celebrated its 75th anniversary. Thanks to all AAP Fellows who contributed to the fund-raising efforts of the Academy during this milestone year, and who attended the very excellent CME meeting in our nation’s capital. During this meeting, Renee Jenkins, MD, of Washington, DC, and Marion Burton, MD, of Columbia, SC, were selected as candidates for Vice-President of the AAP. The election will occur in May 2006. I encourage you all to learn about these two outstanding pediatricians and to participate in the upcoming election. Voting will begin May 1, and will be on-line unless the member requests a paper ballot from the Academy.

Eileen Ouellette, MD, of Massachusetts is the new AAP President, and Jay Berkelhamer, MD, of Georgia is our new Vice President. In the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, the leadership of the Academy is asking the federal government to guarantee every child access to affordable health care in a medical home, regardless of the state in which the child lives. Many hurricane-displaced Medicaid- and SCHIP-eligible children were unable to access necessary health services because of our very complicated and inconsistent federal/state health care safety net. Our disparities in health care only become more glaring when this health care safety net is weakened.

There will be elections in District IV in May 2006, so that we can choose a new representative for the National Nominating Committee and a new District Vice-Chairperson. Joe Lentz, MD, of Tennessee, is completing his three-year stint on the National Nominating Committee. Candidates for this position are Dane Pierce, MD, of Greenville, South Carolina, and Chuck Willson, MD, of Greenville, North Carolina. Both of these candidates have been presidents of their respective state chapters. Iris Snider, MD, of Tennessee, is completing her second and final term as District Vice-Chairperson. Candidates for this position are Jane Foy, MD, of Winston-Salem, NC, and Doug Gregory, MD, of Suffolk, VA. Jane and Doug are both very active in the Academy. Jane is a past-president of the NC Chapter, immediate past-chairperson of the AAP Committee on Psychosocial Aspects of Child and Family Health, and she currently is Chairperson of the Mental Health Task Force for the AAP. Doug is a past-president of the VA Chapter, and is completing over six years of work with the Chapter Forum Management Committee where he has been our representative and the Chairperson of the Committee that has transformed the old Forum into the Annual Leadership Forum. I urge you to learn about our candidates and to participate in the May, 2006, elections.
