 Pediatricians
in private
practice and academic practice, pediatric subspecialists,
pediatric
residents, medical students,
allied
health professionals/associates (including physician assistants, nurse practitioners,
psychologists, social workers and other health professionals) and
practice
managers comprise the membership of the North Carolina Pediatric
Society. However, only Fellows of the American Academy of Pediatrics are
eligible to vote for or hold the offices of the President or Vice-President
of NCPS or vote on business of the American Academy of Pediatrics at the
national level. AAP members are
automatically assigned to a chapter when they join the Academy. This
assignment is based on information reported on their membership application,
with the main determinate being the mailing address. Applicants reporting
that they are currently on active duty in one of the branches of the
military are assigned to either the East or West Uniformed Services
chapters, depending on which side of the Mississippi they reside.
According to an AAP Executive Board ruling,
"Chapter membership must be voluntary and not in any way depend on national
AAP membership or vice versa". Thus, AAP members do not have to belong to
their assigned chapter. By the same token, chapters can permit people to be
members of their chapter even if they are not members of the AAP. These
members are classified by the AAP as "chapter affiliates". Their qualifications, dues,
and benefits are determined by the bylaws of the local chapter.
The North Carolina Pediatric Society also
includes Emeritus and Honorary members. Pediatricians in the Emeritus
category are members of the corporation, but who have reached age 70 or
retired from active practice due to age or illness or for any other just
cause. Pediatricians may become Emeritus members by submitting in writing
this request to the membership chairman. Honorary membership shall be
accorded by the NCPS to those who have done outstanding work in the field of
Pediatrics, must be recommended by the Executive Committee, and approved by
majority vote of members at a regular meeting (and made outstanding
contributions to the NC Pediatric Society or the NC Chapter of the AAP).
Honorary members may serve on committees and participate in clinical
sessions, but they shall not pay dues, be permitted to vote or hold office.
The Executive Committee ruled that they would not be required to pay
registration fees for the spring or annual meeting but would pay for social
events.
The North Carolina
Pediatric Society fiscal year for membership runs from July - June. I'd like to apply! |
