White Coat Wednesday

2017 Year in Review

Thank you NCPeds members for your commitment to our important mission: empowering pediatricians and our partners to foster the physical, social and emotional well-being of infants, children, adolescents and young adults. At the close of this productive year, NCPeds is proud to share the following highlights:

Advocacy Efforts

• Leading a legal challenge, with the North Carolina Academy of Family Physicians and eight practices, to correct a significant underpayment of vaccine administrations in the ACA years which will result in an estimated $10-12 million payment next year to primary care providers for previously administered vaccines

• Increasing the rate paid by Medicaid for well-child visits (by 15%) vaccine administration (by 50%) and Child Medical Evaluations which are scheduled to increase (by an estimated 100%)

• Improving immunization rates and other well-child services among the foster care populations via our Fostering Health NC initiative

• Hosting White Coat Wednesdays to champion child health issues at the General Assembly

Continuing Education Opportunities

• Offering 17 CMEs through signature events, including 2.25 CMEs and 1 MOC-2 credit designed to meet new NC Medical Board requirements on opioids

• Offering 3 hours of MOC-2 at events

• Offering 10 CE at Practice Manager events

• Leading a HPV QI grant with 25 MOC-4 credits for participants; returning participating practices had initial vaccine rates of upwards of 72% compared to a statewide average of 58%

• Peer-to-peer networking opportunities at every event

These outcomes are only possible through the dedication of our Board, Committee Members, donors, members and community partners. Thanks to all for the many ways you support this important work and for keeping NCPeds strong!

Meet the Board Member
Dr. Richard W. Sutherland

Event Spotlight
Winter Open Forum

NCPeds recently welcomed Richard "Dick" Sutherland, MD, to the Board.

Dick, who is Chief of the Division of Pediatric Urology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, is co-chairing NCPeds' new Subspecialist Task Force with Richard Chung, MD, Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Duke University. The Task Force is working to identify how NCPeds can best meet the needs of the growing subspecialist community.

A native of Oregon, Dick graduated from Amherst College and then earned his medical degree from the Oregon Health Sciences University. He completed a fellowship in Pediatric Urology at the Baylor College of Medicine, Texas Children's Hospital.

He resides in Chapel Hill with wife, Donna Sutherland, MD, a Pediatric Emergency Room physician. The couple has two children, one studying at the University of Texas at Austin and the other at New York University. Outside of work, Dick enjoys competing in Ironman distance triathlons and eating ice cream (in no particular order)!
