Get Prepared for Back to School During

Adolescent Immunization Awareness Month

It's summer! A great time to get outside, enjoy time with your family and start preparing for Back to School! That's right, it's the perfect time to begin preparing for school's return by making sure all vaccinations are current and up-to-date.

July is Adolescent Immunization Awareness Month. What better time to start spreading the word to parents about the importance of vaccines?

According to the Adolescent Vaccine Awareness Committee, vaccine updates are important at every age and are especially important among teenagers to prevent diseases such as meningitis and cancers caused by HPV. And with the return of diseases such as pertussis (whooping cough), it's more important than ever to ensure that children are vaccinated.

For preteens, children aged 11-12, there are four recommended vaccines, some of which are required for North Carolina schools.

  • Meningococcal Conjugate Vaccine (MCV4) which protects against some of the bacteria that causes meningococcal disease
  • Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine for girls and boys which helps protect from HPV infection and cancers caused by HPV
  • Tdap vaccine which protects against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (whooping cough)
  • Influenza (flu) vaccine which protects against the flu

Vaccines are readily available throughout the state and are available through visits to family physicians or pediatricians.

Meet the Board
Natacha Draper
Chair-Elect, Practice Manager Section

2018 NCPeds Annual Meeting
Registration Now Open

Natacha Draper is the Chair-Elect of the NCPeds Practice Manager Section and will assume the role of Chair in September.

"I would love to continue to bring relevant, up-to-date topics to members of the NCPeds Practice Managers section," she said of her upcoming Chair position. "My goal is to continue to help my fellow Practice Administrators and encourage others to do the same."

For 13 years, she has served as the Practice Administrator for Western Wake Pediatrics PA in Cary. Natacha joined NCPeds in 2006 and has enjoyed the sense of community she's found among her fellow colleagues.

"I admire everyone within the Society and especially feel honored to be amongst some of the brightest Practice Administrators and support staff, in the State. Learning from them and sharing with them is immensely satisfying," she said. "This field of medicine is ever-evolving and keeping up with the times is rather difficult if doing it alone, without support from other Pediatric practices. This is the best environment to learn, share and be heard."

Natacha lives in Raleigh with her husband and daughters. In her spare time, you'll find her traveling with her family, entertaining at home or competing in pistol competitions with her husband.
